The AISZ admissions process is designed to be thorough but straightforward. We review each application carefully and individually, and our team is on hand to guide you through every step.
All students applying to Grades 1–12 will complete a Reading and Mathematics assessment as part of the admissions process. The MAP Reading assessment may be used to determine whether further evaluation of a student’s English language proficiency is required. Where deemed necessary, applicants to the Upper School who demonstrate a lower level of English proficiency on the MAP Reading assessment may be required to complete the full WIDA English Language Proficiency assessment as an additional component of the admissions process. Applicants who are native English speakers will not be required to complete the WIDA assessment. Students applying to High School (Grades 9–12) will additionally participate in an online interview. All assessments must be supervised by either AISZ or the applicant's current school.
All complete applications are reviewed on an individual basis. Families are notified within ten business days of application completion. Note that reviews during school holidays may take up to four weeks.
For the current 2026-27 school year, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with families notified within ten business days of completion.
Important note: Some grade levels have limited availability, particularly in High School. We recommend contacting the Admissions office to check current availability before beginning your application.
Applications for Grade 11 must be submitted by September 1 of the year of intended enrolment. Grade 12 applications are only accepted under extenuating circumstances, as all subjects are already in their second year of the curriculum. Students without prior IB experience joining in Grade 12 will likely be placed in Grade 11 subjects.
Priority 1 — Dependents of US Embassy staff and associated Diplomatic Missions; eligible dependents of AISZ staff; dependents of other embassies and Diplomatic Missions.
Priority 2 — Siblings of current students; expat or host country families relocating to Croatia; AISZ alumni and their children.
Priority 3 — Expat or host country students transferring from a local or international school in the greater Zagreb area.
All documents must be submitted in English as certified translations.

Ability to Access the Academic Programme
Students should have the academic readiness and skills necessary to participate meaningfully in the AISZ curriculum, taking into consideration the support available within the school.
English Language Proficiency
English is the primary language of instruction at AISZ. All students complete the MAP Reading assessment as part of the admissions process. In Upper School, students whose first language is not English may also complete the WIDA English Language Assessment when additional information about their English proficiency is needed. All non-native English speakers also complete the WIDA assessment once they start attending school as the results help us determine the appropriate level of language support.
Individual Learning Needs
We consider each student’s individual learning profile and educational needs. Families are asked to provide relevant information and documentation so that we can determine whether AISZ has the resources and support necessary to meet those needs.
Potential to Benefit
Above all, we consider whether a student has the potential to benefit from the educational programme and learning environment at AISZ.
School Capacity
Admission is also dependent on available space within the appropriate grade level and on AISZ’s ability to provide the educational and support services required.
Our goal is to ensure that every student who joins AISZ is placed in an environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive. The admissions process therefore considers the individual student as a whole, rather than relying on a single test score or criterion.
