Dear AISZ Families and Students,
I am extremely pleased to be joining the AISZ community as the PreK-12 School Counselor.
Prior to moving to Croatia I worked at International schools in Asia, Africa and Central America. I am from Canada and I have three grown children, two of whom grew up overseas and are TCK’s (third culture kids). I have a Master’s degree in International Counselling from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
School counseling plays a vital role in supporting the AISZ mission of inspiring, motivating, and empowering all learners. Comprehensive school counseling programs directly promote student success through guidance lessons, responsive services, and individual student planning.
Guidance lessons are preventative in design and developmentally appropriate, occurring most frequently in elementary school. They promote the skills and attitudes that help students achieve personal, social, academic, and future professional success. In middle and high school, I will collaborate with teachers on the integration of these skills into their lessons.
Responsive services address immediate student needs through individual counseling and small group counseling. Personal issues, emotional problems, and social complications can distract students of all ages from achieving academic success. Responsive services are designed to help students return to class ready to learn. Because of limitations in the school setting, most responsive services offered at the school are short-term and skill-based. For any student requiring additional support, we maintain a list of counseling resources in the community.
Individual student planning involves developing activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans. In the elementary school, this is done primarily through guidance lessons on the goal-setting process. Individual student planning in high school involves working with students in grade 9 and 10 to develop an understanding of graduation requirements. Beginning in Grade 11 students will develop an individual plan for life post AISZ.
The school counseling program is part of Student Services at AISZ. Because students occasionally experience academic, emotional, social, or other difficulties at school, Student Services is available to assist in a number of areas. Please know that at AISZ we are committed to working with students, parents, teachers, and community resources to promote and enhance the learning process of our students.
